Neisseria meningitidis (gram-negative bacteria) may lead to meningitis, and is responsible for considerable mortality throughout the world. Most disease-causing Neisseira meningitidis strains belong to serogroups B and C in Europe, North & South America, and Australia.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (Gram-positive bacteria) was recognized as a major cause of pneumonia in the late 19th century and is the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in adults and children.
